Blues singer and slide guitarist John William Henderson (Homesick James) was born in Somerville, Tennessee. His early life is unrecorded. In 1932 he relocated to Chicago where he became a prominent blues player. He worked with Elmore James, who he claimed to be his cousin, and with Sonny Boy Williamson II, among others. He was a longtime member of Elmore James’ band from 1955 to 1963, contributing to such tracks as “Dust My Broom,” “The Sky Is Crying,” and “Roll and Tumble.” In 1973 and 1975 he toured Europe as a member of the American Blues Legends tours. There is a story that Elmore James died on Homesick’s couch, while Homesick frantically searched for the former’s medication.

After a number of home moves, Homesick James died in Springfield, Missouri on 13 December 2006, age 96.
