The Impressions – Believe in me

The Impressions formed in 1958 with the original line up of Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, Arthur Brooks, Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield. Richard and Arthur Brooks left the group and were replaced by Fred Cash. Jerry Butler left the group to pursue a solo career. Richard and Arthur Brooks recorded as The Brooks Brothers, not to be confused with an English duo from the late 1950s, The Brook Brothers (Geoff and Ricky).

Curtis Lee Mayfield was born on June 3, 1942 and died on December 26, 1999.
Samuel G. “Sam” Gooden was born on September 2, 1934 and died on August 4, 2022.


Fred Cash was born on October 8, 1940.


Jerry Butler was born on December 8, 1939.

Arthur Brooks died 22 November 2015.

Richard Brooks, no updated information available.

“Believe in me”, recorded 1958, was issued on the Sue LP ILP 943 “Dr Soul”.

  1. I’m sure more of us have ‘Believe In Me’ on the Sue single WI-4003 than on the rather rare Dr. Soul L.P. Though the sleeve notes of the L.P. credit The Impressions, ans suggest that Richard Brooks was the lead singer, both statements are doubtful. That sounds like Jerry to me, and there are some backing vox towards the end who MIGHT be The Impressions. The U.S. VeeJay single (VJ 707) credits just Butler. That could be Curtis Mayfield on guitar, but he didn’t produce the record – Calvin Carter is credited in that role.
